People and Culture Lead

Salary FTE: £29,492 pro rata (£14,746)

Contracted Hours: 17.5hrs / 2.5 days per week

Location: Bristol-based at Babbasa Hub, Backfields House, Upper York Street, St Pauls, Bristol BS2 8QJ – this role is office based.

Babbasa supports low-income and ethnic minority young people to prepare for the workplace as well as support employers to recruit diverse talent, develop cultural competencies and create inclusive work environments for all to thrive. The direct support for young people includes soft skills training, mentoring, and information and guidance support. The direct support for employers includes Recruitment, Inclusion Advisory Support, Cultural Competency Training, Research, Inclusion Needs Analysis and Onboarding Support. Over the next decade, Babbasa plans to grow its services to both young people and employers to respond to the pressing imperative to overcome the structural barriers to workforce inclusion and associated social inequalities in Bristol and beyond. 

Job Purpose 

We are looking for an experienced proactive human resources professional to take on the role of Babbasa’s People & Culture Lead, to ensure efficient and effective human resource, relations and culture management of the organisation, that includes HR systems, policies and processes. You will play a vital part in achieving our strategic goals by supporting the Head of Operations as well as working closely with the other Heads of Departments.


Core responsibilities

Reporting to the Head of Operations, you will be responsible for the following:

  • Culture: Implement the organization’s culture Culture change programme to reflect its values and mission and foster an inclusive work environment
  • HR strategy and planning: In collaboration with the CEO and Head of Operations, develop and execute HR strategies that support the overall business strategy. 
  • Employee engagement and well-being: implement initiatives to create a work environment that supports employees’ physical and mental wellbeing. 
  • Organizational design: Implement the most recent organisational restructure and design that will  achieve business goals through workforce planning and talent management strategies.
  • Legal compliance and risk management: Ensuring that HR practices comply with labour laws and regulations. Manage HR-related risks and legal matters.
  • Employee relations: develop and promote open and effective communication between employees and management.
  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion: develop, advocate and implement policies that prevent discrimination and promote equitable opportunities for all employees.
  • Training and development: Supporting the Head of Impact, Learning and Organisational Development who oversees learning and development programs that enhance employee skills, career growth, and leadership development.
  • Data and analytics: In collaboration with the Head of Operations and the CEO, review HR metrics and analytics to measure the effectiveness of HR programs and make data-driven recommendations to improve HR processes.


Person Specification (Must haves)

You have a robust understanding of the overall HR function  gained through years of practical experience – You are highly numerate and have a demonstrable analytic approach.  You will be able to demonstrate that you can seek the necessary information to create percentage costs and allocations and how to reconcile income and expenditure.

You have experience and demonstrable understanding of finance problem solving – With at least 3 years of professional finance experience, you are able to demonstrate that you can risk plan and model scenarios with solutions, identify and be key in resolving finance issues and drive business improvement of our finance systems. Overall, you will have the aptitude to accommodate responding to what is often a complex and rapidly changing environment. 

Demonstrable understanding of how to work well with others – You develop and maintain excellent working relationships by working collaboratively with colleagues who are budget holders, proactively identifying finance knowledge gaps and helping them develop their own financial understandings with a view to them being accountable for their own budgets, eventually only needing to depend on you for steer and guidance.  You will also be the main collaborative point and contact with our partner Accountants, and have an understanding of processes involved in monthly and end of year accounts.  

Organised – You are very well-organised, have good attention to detail without significant reliance on others. By doing so, you manage your own time well and respect the time of others. You juggle multiple deadlines by working in a programmatic way and have a track-record of delivering on multiple tasks that may have competing deadlines. 

Effective and efficient – You are constantly reflecting on working practices and improving where necessary, this includes creating and or updating related policies. A completer-finisher – you are able to work to deadlines, take initiative and are proactive in your approach to work. You create change that benefits all and is aligned with organisational strategy.


IT knowledge – You have high level IT know-how of associated supporting IT HR packages, processes and further, how HR systems and information interconnect with other systems.  You already have the ability to make system queries, create HR reporting formats and budget management through your advanced experience of using HR software and other tools such as BrightHR, WorkDay, SenseHR, Excel, or other business intelligence  tools that will deliver on the above core responsibilities.

Additionally, you will have:

  • At least 3 years experience working in a HR generalist position.
  • A demonstrable understanding of a human centred approach and design 
  • Robust employment law knowledge 
  • Evidence of CPD
  • Strong interpersonal skills 
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to use initiative and make decisions under pressure

Desirable (in the instance that we receive a high volume of applicants, you will have a more competitive edge if you also have) 

  • Experience working in a standalone People and Culture related position
  • Understanding of project management and associated processes.
  • A CIPD or equivalent qualification

  • You will be expected to be present in office on our core days which are Tuesdays and Thursdays, though we may discuss a reasonable variation of this
  • The interview will take place in the form of a) a 20 minute task on the day; b) 40 mins of panel questions based on competency and technical abilities relevant to the role.
